F-22 Raptor
Developed by Lockheed Martin during the 1990’s to replace the aging F-15 Eagle, the super capable F-22 Raptor began entering service with the USAF in 2004. The U.S. Air Force originally planned for over 250 aircraft, but with severe cost over runs and a weakened economy that number will more likely total 187 aircraft. The U.S. Senate voted July 21st. to terminate further production on 7 more F-22s and sides with the Pentagon’s desire for aircraft better suited to today’s threats in the 21st. century, such as the F-35.
The USAF plans to purchase more than 1700 F-35 Lightnings to replace the F-16 and the aging A-10 fleet. The single engine F-35 will primarily be used to attack ground targets which is today’s war threat. Although the F-22 can carry an internal bomb load, it has not been used in the Iraq/Afghanistan theater. It is still considered to be the world’s premier air to air intercepter-fighter.
